A gift guide for kids?

I was looking over at Black Eiffel the other day and she had a gift guide for youngsters. But I want everything on that gift guide. Apparently good design is good for all ages. Bonus, everything is under $15!

Food + Design = Love

I got an e-mail about purchasing B.R. Guest giftcard. They own restaurants like Dos Caminos that do the table side guacamole, mmmm. I have no intention of buying a gift card, but I there is something about the design that I am really digging.

Abominable Snowman

I love all incarnations of the abominable snowman. Though when I was little and we would go on the Skyway at Disneyland and you would go through the Matterhorn I would have close my eyes and cover my ears because I was so scared of him. But though he still causes me to scream on the Matterhorn, I love him. And I love this stuffed version from Romp.

I Love Bill Murray

I have always loved Bill Murray. I even loved him when he guest hosted on Regis and Kathy Lee and wouldn't stop saying "I'll tell ya what."  I think I went around saying that for days.  Now apparently he is the new party boy of the hipster community. And that makes me oh so happy. You may have all seen this on A Cup of Jo. Which is where I saw it, which then took me to an article about his partying ways, and I just had to share the final lines of the article with you all.

Then again, perhaps he's just toying with us all. There's an urban legend that's gone round until no one is sure who it happened to, or if it happened at all. It was late one night, a few years ago, when a young man was walking through Union Square Park. He suddenly felt someone behind him, their hands over his eyes. When he turned in surprise, there was Bill Murray, his creased face leaning in close. Bill whispered, "No one is ever going to believe you," and then just walked away.

Hitchcock Redesigned

Recently I did a project designing a poster for an Alfred Hitchcock film festival. My friend then saw these posters and thought of me. I thought they were pretty cool so I thought I would share them with all of you!

Equus

I saw Equus last night, famous for Daniel Radcliffe (aka Harry Potter) running around naked gouging out horses eyes. But let me tell you it is so much more. It is one of the best plays I have seen in quite some time. Richard Griffiths is fantastic (aka Uncle Vernon from Harry Potter) and so is Daniel. The play is by no means normal, but it is by all means brilliant. If you get the chance to see it, do.

Also if you can find the episode of Inside the Actors studio that just aired with Daniel Radcliffe I would definitely recommend watching that as well. Gave me some new insight to Mr. Radcliffe.

Alphabet Bags

Remember these Alphabet Bags that we all know and love?

Well I was just on Urban Outfitters and saw this:
How depressing, I was looking for signs that the Urban and Alphabet Bags were working together, but sadly it appears urban is just ripping them off.

I own many things from Urban, but being a designer it makes me sad that they are ripping independent off. Check out this site for more.

Handkerchiefs

Part of me misses the use of handkerchiefs, but then I also find them quite repulsive. When I blow my nose I would like to just throw that thing away. But still I love them. And I especially love these handkerchiefs from Jack Spade, so quirky and cute, of course in a manly way since they are for men.

Alex if you used handkerchiefs I would get you these.

Brilliant

Last night I finished A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius by Dave Eggers. It was wonderful.

One of my favorite quotes comes after one of the characters opens a pack of modeling clay for Christmas.

"Thank you," he says.
"Thank who?"
"I don't know. You?"
"No, not me. Jesus."
"Thank you, Jesus?"
"Yes, Toph, Jesus died for your Christmas fun."
"He did?"
I turn to Bill. Bill is staying out of it.
"He did," I say. "Beth, did he not?"
"Indeed he did. Indeed he did."

Things I miss

So I was watching ABC Family, as most 20 year olds do, and a disney movie came on. Specifically, "Cars" and instead of seeing the opening logo that you see above I saw some horrible digitized version of it. It made me so sad. Everyone seems to be doing things digital just because they can. I yearn for cartoons that actually look like they were drawn, those were and still are the best.

When asked...

..."Do you know of any good books?" I always respond with two right away. Marjorie Morningstar by Herman Wouk and The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay. I am an avid reader, but these two books are by far my favorites. So if you are looking a good book, or two, to curl up with this winter I would definitely pick one, or both, of these up.

Bonus, they are older books so you can probably find a used copy! I pretty much only buy used books now, good for the bank and good for the enviroment.

I'm dreaming of a White Christmas

Every year my family watches White Christmas together. I can't wait to watch it every year. Bing Crosby singing White Christmas gets me in the holiday spirit every time.

As if

I love Clueless. I am always amazed when people from my generation have never seen it. It like totally defines the 90's.

I had the VHS version of Clueless and at the end was this music video by Supergrass. You may recognize the song from the movie. It is grand, and I have come to realize so is Supergrass.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Entourage

I just watched the season finale of Entourage, I saw an interview with Jeremy Piven and he said that this is the best season yet, and I agree. If you have never watched Entourage, or just aren't caught up on this season (Alex), catch up.

RACOONS!

I love Racoons. This love began when I first read the book Rascal by Sterling North (which by the way is a great name.

I have actually taken to re-reading books that I read growing up. The classic children's novels are actually brilliantly written. And you get a whole other dimension from reading them all grown up. I started with re-reading The Phantom Tollbooth, and then I read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and then The Secret Garden.

One of my favorite quotes comes from The Phantom Tollbooth."Anything is possible, just as long as you don't know it is impossible." That always helps me get through an intense project.

The Bitch Went Nuts

So a while back a saw Ben Folds, he was amazing, and he played The Bitch Went Nuts. He explained to the audience that this song is not meant be sexist. It is about the guy who says "The Bitch went nuts" as a reason he and his girl broke up. Whereas the girl has a really sensitive and emotional explanation she gives her girlfriends. I love it, because it is true, and being that girl who hangs out with the guys I have heard this plenty. And to be honest sometimes its true.

BTW, Al, I totally thought of you when he was talking about this song.

The Bitch Went Nuts
Original Artist: Ben Folds

The bitch went nuts
She stabbed my basketball
And the speakers to my stereo
She called me cunt
But nothing prepared me for
What I found when I came home

Oh and I
Make my own bed
I lie in it
You lie in yours (you lie, you lie in yours)
But they want more
They're at my door
With torches
Please leave me alone
You know just shut it just shut it just shut it

The bitch went nuts
She photoshopped my face (shopped his face)
On to every boy who'd done her wrong
Then she burned them telepathically
Onto the brains of all her embittered drones

Oh now
Now they want more
They're at my door
With torches, scores and scores and scores
To settle with themselves
Who would have thought
I'd scorned them all
They've got a doll of me
They're burning, they're burning, they're burnin
Their own memories

Why do they all know? (Go!)

The bitch went nuts y'all
But everyone said she might
Oh, holy fuckin' shit
Seriously now
Now they want more
they're at my door
with torches, scores and scores
You would have thought
I'd scorned them all
They've got a doll of me
They're burnin'

Why do they all know? (Go!)

Six Feet Under

I have recently gotten into Six Feet Under. And by into I mean watching 4 episodes in a row, and still wanting to watch more. Currently I am 11 episodes into the series. I remember hearing a lot about it when I was high school and being told it was something I should watch, but I think I wouldn't have enjoyed it then (a mere three years ago). Now I love it. And it makes me cringe sometimes, which is just one of the many grand elements in this show.

Another great thing about the show is Peter Krause. He plays Nate, and is splendid. Do you guys remember him on that show "Sports Night"? And after perusing his IMDB he was also on "Cybil" which I totally forgot he was on! Now he is on Dirty Sexy Money, which I have heard good things about and have decided to give a chance because I enjoy Peter so much.

So to sum up, watch Six Feet Under (even though it is not longer running), and enjoy Peter Krause in everything he does.

Mad Men and Bewitched

Has anyone else noticed the similarities between Mad Men and Bewitched? Let me lay them out for you.

Donald Draper & Darrin Stephens: Both work in a big name add agency. Both have dark hair, and are handsome. Both are sensitive and loving, but have some anger issues.

Roger Sterling & Larry Tate: Both are partners in an advertising agency. Both have silver hair. Both like to drink and like women. I am guessing if Bewitched wasn't so PG of a show Larry Tate would have had an affair or two.

Betty Draper & Samantha Stephens: Beautiful, young, blonde housewives.

Sally Draper & Tabitha Stephens: Oldest child, girl, blonde hair.

Bobby Draper & Adam Stephens: Youngest child, boy, brown hair.

I was just watching Bewitched the other night, and made the connection between Larry & Darrin and  Donald & Roger and then I realized the rest, and wanted to share with you all!

Happy Halloween!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

The fact that Halloween is on Friday this year is amazing. My two friends and I are going to be Powerpuff Girls tonight, we wikipediad them, and it pretty much describes are friendship. Of course including the super powers. I am going to be the green one.

Also the Village Halloween Parade is apparently recreating the parade scene from Ferris Bueller. CANNOT WAIT!

I admit it

I have a thing for facial hair. Whether it be a fabulous old man strutting down the street with a moustache and pipe, or a hipster with some adorable scruff. I dig facial hair, and I am not afraid to admit it. Thus I love this logo. Created by someone called TConrad on LogoPond.
