I'm on an airplane

Right now I am on an airplane. That's right, my airplane has internet! I am really excited about it.

I am on an airplane because I am heading home to the West Coast for Thanksgiving. I am really excited about seeing my family, my dog, and all my friends.

The Richanbach household has rented three movies that seem to be typical of a holiday weekend for us. Start Trek (the new one), Miracle on 34th St (it was a tough choice between Natalie Wood and Dylan McDermott, but Dylan McDermott won), and Rear Window.

It's Always Sunny

Let me tell you what I am excited about tonight. Having It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia on DVR. Kitten mittens rocked my world two weeks ago, and Charlie's mind blew my mind last week. I am excited to see what is in store.

The reason I must DVR it though is because my lovely roommate and I are going to see Coco Avant Chanel at the Paris Theater. We have been planning on doing this for weeks, and feel it is a very good choice for our inaugural film at the theater.

I am normally opposed to listening to Christmas music before Thanksgiving. I really like Thanksgiving, so I like to give it its time, then I still have a whole month to get excited about Christmas. But when the Christmas songs are being sung live to your by Harrick Connick Jr. I make an exception.

Tuesday was the unveiling of the Bloomingdale's Holiday windows (which are all sparkly!), and to celebrate the unveiling Harry Connick Jr. did a little performance on Third Avenue. I work across the street from Bloomindale's so of course my co-worker and I took a little fieldtrip across the street to see the man himself.

The photos are from his performance, sorry they are all blurry and you can't see his pretty face. I was close enough where I could, but my iPhone was apparently not aware of that. I do like the colors in the photos though.

Outside The Strand

I don't walk by The Strand as often as I used to. That is probably a good thing, considering I always find myself looking at the books they have outside and buying one or two, and my apartment does not have enough space many more books. Above our a couple of covers that caught my eye when I did walk by The Strand yesterday.

I have been craving a bicycle for a long time. First I felt like my neighborhood was not very bicycle friendly, now I live in a walk up with no space to store a bike. But when I am running late to class I think about how splendid it would be to be gliding along 9th St on a bicycle.

Bike's have also been popping up all over the place (which I guess isn't too unusual).

Joanna posted about bikes/parisian lifestyle over on Cup of Jo as part of her research for her YSL project. Um, yes I would love to be fabulous faux Parisian on a bike in New York City. Way to read my mind Joanna....

AND I read a spectacular article in the NY Times about Mark Paul Gosselar and his biking ways. So great, another reason to ride a bike, so I can become Zach Morris' friend. Though I have a feeling my biking wouldn't extend much beyond biking around the neighborhood.

I have recently become a little obsessed with Tumblrs. I love my blog roll, but sometimes I do not have energy for them. The tumblrs are a wonderful way to enjoy a stream of images. This is one that I grabbed from Tree Castles(though I enjoy their url name "my peter pan complex" a little more) recently. I bet way too much of my harddrive space is taken up by tumblr and ffffound images.

Last night I was watching "The Lip Reader" episode of Seinfeld, and I realized that the hundreds of hours I have spent watching Seinfeld has impacted my personality pretty severely...

1) I think Elaine Benes has made me a violent person.
Have you ever noticed how much Elaine shoves and smacks Jerry, Kramer, and George? Yah, I tend to do that.

2) Seinfeld has defined my ethical viewpoint
For better or for worse Seinfeld has defined what I see as right and wrong. Yes I do think people are the worse and I do think I should be treated like Ted Danson.

I saw this video posted on my good friend's Jonas Sees in Color wall, and was really hoping it would be the band in the video. I was mildly disappoint that it wasn't them, but that disappointment quickly went away because this video is so fantastic.

If you have heard of Jonas Sees In Color, who should check them out right after you watch the video above. Their album just came out this September, their music is the bomb and they as people are just hillarious.

I hope you all had a scary halloween. Mitch and I going out as Taylor and Brad was a complete success. (See photos above)

We went to the Vice party in Brooklyn which had 1994 theme. There were Kurt Cobains and Coutney Loves abound. One of my favorite costumes was Andre Agassi with a full head of hair circa '94.

The party was great (open bar!), which probably lead to our decision to have Mitch/Brad crowd surf, and then him being dropped and getting a hefty gash on his head. Don't worry he is fine, it actually served as quite the punctuation to AN AMAZING HALLOWEEN.

Tomorrow is Halloween, and I am very excited. I mentioned earlier this week what I am doing, but I did not tell you what I am going as. WELL...Mitch and I are going as Rachel Zoe's assistants Taylor and Brad. I am really excited to act like I hate everything tomorrow night. I got a great/disgusting blonde wig, and am ready to get my Taylor on, and Mitch is the perfect Brad.

We got our glasses for our costumes from when we saw Toy Story Double Feature in 3D. That was a pretty spectacular night. We saw the 10 o'clock show on a Saturday Night, so it was us and about 10 other really cool people. I forgot what an amazing movie Toy Story is, I DIE.

Annie and I finally got goldfish for our apartment. Their names are Jordan Catalano, Brian Krakow, and Angela Chase. I really hope you know what I am referencing, if not please go watch every episode of My So Called Life right now. The first couple of days in their new home Brian and Angela had quite a love affair, I caught them kissing multiple times, and swimming around the tank holding fins. Jordan was a jealous one always trying to break them up. Then one morning I walked out into the kitchen to find Angela floating at that bottom of the bowl. It was heartbreaking, but I think it has done wonders for Brian's and Jordan's friendship. Bros before hos, bros before hos.

Yesterday one of things on the list that made Matthew Gubler hot was that he is artsy. I have been noticing lately this is a qualifying factor to make a lot of people hot. For example I saw The Henry Clay People the other night, and they were delightful, and I thought the band was rather attractive, but when I took away the instruments, I realized they were actually quite average Joes. Musical talent just makes guys hot.

I got to see the band Mumford & Sons multiple times during CMJ, and let me tell you they are cute with or without the instruments. I am so sad they aren't in town anymore, but I can put their CD on repeat and pretend that they are. Seriously, these guys are AMAZING. Check them out nowwwwwww.

I have recently acquired a celebrity crush on Matthew Gubler. I had just seen him here and there (He was Tom's friend in 500 Days of Summer), and thought I might be the only one with this crush. Then I saw this amazing tumblr post that talked about "all the ways he's hot". I agree with all of the reasons this tumblrer listed.

On Tuesday we had a beautiful day here in New York. I was around Bryant Park for work, and realized I had forgotten how wonderful it is! There is a borrowing library, ping pong tables, and petanque! And of course the beautiful architecture of the Library. It was the perfect day to be in the park because it the weather was just right where it was pleasant to be out but the park wasn't overloaded. I love (re)discovering things about this city!

Sesame Street + Mad Men

Sesame Street does a Mad Men episode. I would write more, but I think nymag says it best:

"When the creators of Sesame Street announced in early August that they'd be putting together a Mad Men–centric episode, our minds immediately began spinning with potential plot twists for our favorite characters. For example, what if Cookie Monster revealed that he stole his identity from a cookie-loving dead guy during the Korean War? Somewhat sadly (yet as expected), the finished product concerns itself more with being wholesome and educational than it does with showing Muppets finger-banging each other. The other night I went to dinner with my delightful roommate the one, the only, Annie Fisher. We went Phebes on 4th st, and they had what I would consider one of the best music selections I have heard in a long time. They played so many greats from my Middle School days including Survivor by Destiny's Child, Lady Marmalade, and Buddy Holly by Weezer. Oh do I love Weezer, I also love old school Nick at Nite TV (before they turned into the George Lopez channel). Which makes the Buddy Holly video a favorite of mine.

I moved last week (once the apartment is in order I will post pictures) and I am finding this site, Goodbye Wafflemaker, very inspiring. The creator of the site is moving and selling everything she owns so she can be immersed in her new community.

My brother has spent the last year essentially living out of a suitcase, which is a very freeing way to live. I on the other hand have been a pack rat my entire life, which would make that a very difficult way for me to live. I am not being forced to do that, but new place is quite a bit smaller so I have been purging like nobodies business.

I kind of want to sell everything I know, but then I think about losing my beautiful books and clothes and I get really sad. It is a nice idea though.

Red Beard Press

I visited a master printer this spring and she was showing us work she has collected over the years. My favorite piece she showed us was from an illustrator she called Red Beard. She purchased it from his senior show, and I would have done the same, it is amazing.

It is a two layer piece, the first layer is on waxed paper which makes the paper translucent. The second is on a piece of opaque paper. I fell in love, and it made want to stretch my illustration muscles.

I wish you guys could see this piece in person, but definitely go take a look at the rest of Red Beard Press.

Clair makes films. Last year she traveled to New Zealand to film a documentary. Clair eats a lot of pickles and sometimes chews with her mouth open - but only when she's alone. Clair has a dog named Yoshi who rides a skateboard!

Andy is a park ranger in Oregon.
He protects wildlife and nature on a daily basis. Andy drives a yellow jeep that has no doors, and plays the bongo drum in a band called "Bare Feet". Andy loves Popsicles and thunderstorms.

I love the pairing of Claire with her BF in one of the pictures on her listing, and Benny is red-headed park ranger. Does it get much better?

I have the bestest mommy ever. Saturday night she sent me the link to the new book by Sara Fanelli and says if I like she will get it for me. How sweet! Of course I loved the book and now it is on its way to me.

I had not heard of this lovely illustrator before and now I love her. This book sounds amazing, it is a book full of literary quotes and illustrations done by Fanelli. I cannot wait to peruse it!

Below is a picture of what my mom looks like essentially. I look exactly like my mom, and when I have long hair and I straighten it scares me to look in a mirror because I look so much like her. So this her, with a sad face, because I am not on the West Coast as much I wish that I was. (By the way, we both have chins, but it is hidden in this turtleneck, a favorite of the original Betsy)

I just watched In The Land of Women. Well kind of, it was on the TV, and I was in the room most of the time. I enjoyed it much more this time around. And I started to wonder where is Adam Brody these days? I have always liked him, ever since his days as Dave Rygalski on Gilmore Girls.

Well I IMDB'd this fella, and he is rumored to be in the upcoming Justice League movie as The Flash/Barry Allen. That should be interesting.

Also, Ginnifer Goodwin is at the end of this movie! I had forgotten that. I enjoy her as well. Isn't interesting how everyone is talking about her now, and I haven't heard about Mr. Brody in ages? My how the tables have turned.

Such Great Heights

I was writing a paper last night and had my iTunes on shuffle and the first song to come on was the Such Great Heights cover by Iron and Wine. I don't think I will ever get tired of this song. I think every cover I heard I have liked, but Iron and Wine might be my favorite.

Garden State can be kind of tiresome now, but when it came out that movie and soundtrack were pretty amazing.

Grilled Cheese, Fries, and a Milkshake

Yesterday was one of those days that just did not need to exist. When I have those days I always find a grilled cheese, french fries, and a chocolate milkshake seem to help. So that is exactly what I had for lunch yesterday, and it was delicious.

I have been in a kind of funk lately, completely unmotivated to do anything. What do you guys do to help get yourself out of a funk?

I have always debated with people when you say XOXO which is hugs and which is kisses. I have come to believe that X is hugs because it relates to the crossing of arms with hugging, and O is lips because it relates to the shape of lips. Well my brother just sent me the Wikipedia article debating this very fact. It says:

"Hugs and kisses, also love and kisses, is a term for a sequence of the letters X and O, e.g. XOXO, typically to express affection or good friendship at the end of a written letter, email or SMS text message.
There is much debate on whether X's represent hugs or kisses. Some argue that X's represent kisses, but due to the "hugs and kisses" paradigm, some contend that 'X' is in fact lined up with the 'hug' and 'O' with the kiss. Also, arms crossing while hugging indicate an X while puckered lips form an O. Nevertheless, this proposition is contradicted by the Oxford English Dictionary, which states that 'X' is "used to represent a kiss, esp. in the subscription to a letter."[1]. The Shawks Inc. encyclopedia, an authority in urban lingo, has it that the 'O' represents a hug, and the 'X' a kiss, with the explanation that if you look at each letter like it was representing two people from a bird's eye view, the "O" represents the arms of those persons hugging each other while the "X" is evocative of two people kissing."

Oh who is that girl with the awkward Bangs in that photo with Phoenix? That would be me. Those guys are some of the coolest Parisians you will ever meet, and they are all incredibly sweet. ANDDDDD tonight they will be performing on SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE with the one and only Seth Rogen as host. Sadly I do not get to go tonight, but I am so excited to watch them perform, they are going to be spectacular. When you see and hear them you will wonder why you haven't been listening to them all along. Unless you have been listening to them then you will be patting yourself on your back for your good taste.

I was at a party Saturday night talking about the usual things, Aaron Carter and presidential facts. A kid at the party informed me about presidential doodles. He told me if you google presidential doodles you can find a whole slew of doodles presidents have done. AMAZING is what I have to say to that. Through my googling I found a whole book of presidential doodles, called oddly enough Presidential Doodles.

Spring Break MONDAY

So I decided I would finally post some of my sightings from my spring break in the city. I had a great first weekend, but I do not have my images ready to post from that, so here we are Monday March 16th. I started my day with getting my hair cut. It was a lovely way to start the week.

From there I grabbed some lunch, and was perplexed where to eat it before I went to the MoMA, since I was in midtown I decided to eat in one of the public courtyards big buildings are required to put in, because thats what they are there for right? Well I chose the right courtyard, because it had a Hello Kitty themed sculpture garden. She just seems to be everywhere, in office buildings and creepy M.A.C. ads.

Outside of the courtyard I saw a movie trailer that had Lucy and Desi on the doors. I see trailers with their names on it everywhere, I always wonder what is going on being a big I Love Lucy fan, my brother thought perhaps all these trailers belong to Desilu productions.

Then I headed to the MoMA, and saw EVERYTHING. That's right everything. I started in teh 6th floor, and wandered through every gallery. It was absolutely exhausting, but was cool because I have never done that before. I normally go to see a few exhibits and thats it. The special exhibit on the 6th floor is a retrospective of of Martin Kippenbergers work, which I was not familiar with before but was thoroughly impressed with after visiting. Such an expansive body of work, it is people like him who make me want to spend all my time creating, and also anger me because I do not spend all my time creating. I am also including the picture of the matchbook I mentioned a while ago (I saw it at the MoMA first). I also got to see the MoMA 40 years of Modern Art Exhbiting, which was also very cool.

The MoMA wore me out, so I decided to head home and I passed the Friars Club on the way and noticed a plaque noting there was a time capsule buried there not to be opened until 2104. I thought that was pretty cool.

So I was watching Lifetime Movie Network (because I love me some fine cinema) and I saw the last half of a commercial for another new Zooey Deschanel movie!!! I was walking out the door, but I had to know more. Thankfully I possess an iPhone and was able to watch the trailer on my commute, Zooey is incredibly adorable in everything she does.

I am also really enjoying the fact John Goodman and Ed Asner are in this flick.

A while back I was babysitting my friends kid, who is probably one of the coolest kids ever. He is a baby, but kind of a 20 year old. He stays up late and sleeps in, always seems to be in on the jokes when everyone is hanging out, and tries to fit in. He doesn't want to sound uncool, so when you ask him a question and he isn't sure the answer, he goes "myeah" all non-chalant like.

Anyways the point of this post, is when I was babysitting him the dvd that was out was the first season of Sesame Street. This kid was so cool, he watched old school sesame street, none of this modern day stuff where cookies are just a sometime snack. I loved watching it with him.

This is kid is really cool, but watching The Office made him cry, that wasn't so cool.

I was reminded of this over on maquette where I saw an old post she had done about Stevie Wonder on Sesame Street back in the day.

Milk + I Love You Man

This was a peculiar weekend for me, I saw two movies, in the theaters. I love movies, but I rarely end up going to see them in the theaters. It is a combination of factors really. Movie tickets are $12 which just seems ludicrous to me, I am a little lazy, and movie theater crowds often annoy me. This weekend though I sucked it up and went to see two fantastic movies.

First I saw Milk when I had some free time downtown on Saturday. It was amazing, it was inspiring and heartbreaking at the same time.

Then I saw I Love You, Man last night. I had been anticipating this movie for quite some time. Paul Rudd and Jason Segel are two of my favorite guys, and it was amazing to see Paul Rudd in such a large lead role. As you guys know, I love Paul Rudd. The movie did not let me down when little bit, my brother wrote me this message after he saw it:

I want to be like Paul Rudd when I grow up, but taller.

Go see I Love You, Man.

But last night I got a hankering for The Temptations. They are just so splendid, I listened to them all night long.

My parents did a very good job educating me music wise growing up. We listened to everything, music that was current, music my parents listened to growing up, music their parents had listened to, everything. I thought knowing all of this music was normal, the other kids weren't listening to The Beach Boys? They didn't know who Linda Ronstadt was? That came as surprise to me later on, kind of like I thought everyone knew JFK was a speed reader.
